ICPP Symposium 2018

Dr. Sue Cohen co-organized an international symposium on the "Challenges and Successes to Agricultural Technology Transfer Globally" at the ICPP meeting in Boston, MA this year and presented Certificates of Achievements to four outstanding scientists. Researchers were selected based on current presentations related to the special session and previous research accomplishments . Peter Bonants, plant health manager at Wageningen Plant Research, Wageningen, Netherlands, was recognized for his ongoing development of diagnostic methods for global plant quarantine activities and his presentation “Innovative detection methods to support plant health diagnostics .” James Dale, Distinguished Professor at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, was recognized for his research accomplishments in banana diseases and his presentation “Genetic engineering for resistance to Panama disease and banana bunchy top .” Alessandra Alves de Souza, researcher at Centro de Citricultura Sylvio Moreira—Agronomic Institute (IAC), Cordeiropolis, Brazil, was recognized for her research accomplishments in molecular microbe–plant interactions and her presentation “Advances and innovative concepts to control Xylella fastidiosa colonization in citrus plants .” Mathews Paret, assistant professor at the University of Florida, Quincy, United States, was recognized for his extension program on disease management of tomatoes and his presentation “A novel alternative to copper bactericide: Magnesium based nanomaterials for management of tomato bacterial spot .”

ICPP Activities 2018

Dr. Sue Cohen, Center for Regulatory Research, LLC co-organized the first ICPP Science Ambassador Program. The program is designed to foster networking, mentoring of first meeting participants, and collaboration of international scientists with scientists from the American Phytopathological Society.

New Research: Fruit and Vegetable Import Pathways for Invasive Pests

Lichtenberg and Olson examine fruit and vegetable import pathways by commodity and country at high risk for introduction of invasive pests. The authors provide recommendations for identifying higher risk import pathways of phytosanitary concern based on their findings.

Happy New Year! Center for Regulatory Research, LLC highlights for this year include the completion of the WSARE grant. Dr. Robert Schlub and the University of Guam have released the final version of the Plant Disease Index for Guam. The index may be downloaded from the home web page. The University of Minnesota, St. Paul rapid response grant with Dr. Angela Orshinsky is completed and a summary of high tunnel tomato leaf mold survey results in Minnesota are also posted on the home web page.

Cochran Fellows Integrated Pest Management Training August 8-19, 2016

Sue Cohen, President, Center for Regulatory Research, LLC, presented a training course on “Integrated Pest Management of Fruits and Vegetables” August 8 - 19, 2016 for seven USDA Cochran Fellows from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The training course was hosted by the Stakman-Borlaug Center for Sustainable Plant Health and the Department of Plant Pathology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul. James Bradeen, professor and head of the Department of Plant Pathology and co-director of the Stakman-Borlaug Center, welcomed the USDA Cochran Fellows and described current international research activities in the department and Stakman-Borlaug Center. Karen Hokanson, Senior Fellow of the Stakman-Borlaug Center, provided administrative support for the program and participated in the orientation session of the Fellows. Tavvs Alves, Ph.D. program, Department of Entomology and Aimee Talbot, M.S. program, Department of Horticultural Science assisted with the training program as co-instructors. Mohamed Yakub, outreach and education coordinator, of the Stakman-Borlaug Center provided educational and evaluation support for the program. The following instructors from UMN contributed presentations or field trip assistance during the training program: Brett Arenz (Assistant Teaching Professor, Department of Plant Pathology), Mathew Clark (Assistant Professor, Department of Horticultural Science), Joshua Havill (M.S. program, Department of Plant Pathology), Dean Herzfeld (Associate Extension Professor, Department of Plant Pathology), Molly Kreiser (Ph.D. program, Department of Horticultural Science), Angela Orshinsky (Assistant Professor, Department of Plant Pathology), Andrew Petran (Postdoctoral Associate, Department of Horticultural Science) and Renata Pincelli-Souza (Postdoctoral Associate, Department of Horticultural Science). Training included presentations, field trips, and computer exercises. Field activities included a visit to Minnestra Apple Orchard, UMN Arboretum and UMN Horticultural Research Center, UMN Sustainable Fruit and Vegetable Farm, UMN tissue culture facility for hazelnuts, UMN Greenhouse production of selected Hops for commercial micro-brewing industry, vegetables produced in hydroponics and aquaponics systems, and a visit to see research on tree root architecture in a rhizotron. Participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina in the training program were selected by the USDA, Foreign Agricultural Service for the Cochran Fellowship Program and included Mirko Jokic (Ministry of Agriculture), Dragan Zaric (Ministry of Agriculture), Luka Bosnjak (Sjemenarna ltd., Mladen Zovko (University of Moster), Bojana Sukalo (Ministry of Agriculture), Almira Konjic (University of Moster), and Smiljana Knezevic (Ministry of Agriculture).
